Aircon Maintenance usually reminds you of servicing your aircon, washing or cleaning the aircon with chemical or spraying jet of steam to remove dirt and dust accumulated in the aircon. However there are other more routine maintenance and tips which require little affort to ensure your aircon performs better and save your electricity bills.
Aircon’s performance is partly affected by how clean the aircon unit is. The cleaner it is, the more efficient and effective it removes heat. This is because the dirt and dust which forms an insulation layer which prevents the effective transfer of heat by the aircon and therefore results in less effective aircon performance.
In order to keep the aircon performing at its best, we can perform a few simple tasks and they are as follows:
Aircon Maintenance by Cleaning or Changing Aircon Filter of Fan Coil
The filter is easy to remove and clean. If it is damaged or very dirty, you may consider replacing it. By cleaning the aircon filter every fortnight, you ensure that there is minimal accumulation of dirt and dust so that your aircon performs at its best.
Clear the Dirt and Dust from Fins of the Condenser-Compressor (Outdoor) Unit – This Area of Aircon Maintenance is Frequently Neglected
By using a water spray with sufficient pressure, you can wash the dirt and dust from the fins of the condenser-compressor unit. This condenser-compressor unit blows the heat away and must be effective for your aircon to perform well. However, living in Singapore high rise building means that the water you sprayed will flow to your neighbour who is staying downstairs and they may not be very happy with your aircon maintenance work. As such, you may wish to wait for the rain to come before doing so. When you spray your outdoor unit while it is raining, your neighbour downstairs may not be aware and may think that it is rain flowing down rather than the water from cleaning your aircon outdoor unit.
Besides cleaning the condenser-compressor unit, make sure that there is nothing blocking the unit’s fan which is drawing air from the surrounding and blowing air at the fins to remove heat. Both sides of the fan should not be block for the aircon to effectively draw and blow air.
Change Aircon if it is more than 8 years old – Just Change Rather Than Maintain
If your aircon system is more than 8 years old, you may wish to change a new set of aircon because the newer aircon usually comes with latest technology which is more energy efficient. You will be surprise to see that your old aircon units only qualify for 2 ticks while the new aircon units qualify for 4 ticks under the NEA energy efficient label indication. It is usually more worthwhile to change the aircon than to continue maintaining an old aircon which is prone to break down.
Clean your Room and Apartment Frequently – Maintaining Aircon Without Cleaning It
Where does the dirt and dust (which we found in the aircon) come from? They come from your room or apartment. If your room or apartment is dirty and dusty, the dirt and dust may drift in the air, get sucked into the aircon and trapped in the filter or other parts of the aircon. As such, you should tackle the cause of the problem and clean your room more regularly. By ensuring the room is less dusty and dirty, you somehow maintain your aircon without even touching it.
