Less energy efficient aircon will be phased out by National Environment Agency (NEA) with effect from 1 September 2016. Aircon with one tick on its energy label will no longer be imported on 1 September 2016. This is because NEA raises its Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS). Aircon must have a minimum of two ticks on its energy label. This is to ensure the use of more energy efficiency appliances in Singapore. Refrigerators, dryers, etc are also covered under the energy labeling scheme. The goal is to reduce electricity consumption over the long run.
The switch to aircon with two ticks should help the household save substantially on its electricity bill. According to NEA, aircon usage accounted for 37 percent of the total electricity consumption of the households. This means that more energy efficiency aircon should cut electricity consumption more significantly than other household appliances. Households should consider buying aircon with three or four ticks and be pro-active in reducing electricity consumption. Though energy efficient aircon may cost more to install, buyer should recover the cost from the electricity savings over the long run.
Energy Efficient Representation
- One tick means low energy efficiency
- Two ticks means fair energy efficiency
- Three ticks means good energy efficiency
- Four ticks means very good energy efficiency
- Five ticks means excellent energy efficiency
