How can we extend the life span of our aircon? How can we avoid unnecessary repair?
Proper and regular aircon maintenance is critical to extending the aircon’s life span and avoiding unnecessary repair. When aircon internal unit (Fan Coil shown below right) and external unit (Compressor-Condenser unit shown below left) are cleaned and serviced regularly, it works efficiently and effectively to cool the room without straining the aircon system. On the other hand, a dirty aircon system reduces the efficiency and effectiveness of the aircon cooling process and makes it work harder to cool the same room. By placing undue stress on the aircon system, its life span would naturally be shortened.
When maintaining aircon system in Singapore, the external unit is frequently neglected because it is usually located outside of the apartment and inaccessible to us. However, cleaning the external unit is equally important to ensure that the whole system functions at optimal level. The external and internal units are just like our hands and legs, they have to move in sync to carry out an activity properly. If one of the units is weakened, the other unit will have difficult maintaining the same level of performance.
Besides regular maintenance by aircon technician, you should clean the aircon filters in between the regular maintenance. The accumulation of dust and dirt in the filter can affect the flow of air over time and makes the aircon works harder to cool the room and shortened its life span. You may also wish to take note of the following preventive maintenance advice:
Do Not Switch On and Off the Aircon Frequently
Some people have the habit of switching the aircon off when the room is cold and switching it on again when the room is hot. They may have the perception that this would save electricity. However, by doing so, it actually shortens the aircon’s life span on the same theory as an non-inverter aircon.
Aircon’s Fan Coil Situated Away from Direct Heat
The thermostat in the aircon Fan Coil is sensitive to heat. It signals the extent of cooling required by the room. If it is exposed to heat like sunlight, lamps and other heat sources, it would send the wrong signal indicating that the room is not cold enough and makes the system work harder to cool the room. Therefore, you should locate the aircon’s fan coil away from direct sunlight or heat. Read more about aircon installation here.
Remove Obstructing Things from the Fan Coil and Compressor-Condenser Unit
The aircon unit requires proper ventilation to ensure optimal cooling capacity and efficiency. Any obstruction which affects air flow in and out of the aircon will make the aircon works harder and shorten its life span. Therefore, remove all things near the aircon unit so that there is no obstruction and a good flow of air around the aircon.
Shut Windows and Doors
When windows and doors are not tightly shut, more heat will enter the room and the aircon is made to work harder to maintain the pre-set temperature. Make sure your room is properly sealed and insulated from external heat. This would minimize external heat transfer into the room and therefore decrease the aircon’s workload and extend aircon’s life span.
